The therapists may ask the parents or carers to take on quite specific roles in the joint sessions, such as actively helping the child develop a coherent narrative.

Careful preparation is needed with parents and carers for them to fulfil this role. Working together, parents, carers and the therapist will need to plan what appropriate information is needed to help the child make sense of their past. Planning will also involve deciding how to give this information to the child.
