A mother and daughter in an art therapy assessment session were absolutely screaming at each other. They had dropped out of family therapy because the girl had felt that the family therapist had taken the mum’s side rather than her side.

The art therapist was able to interrupt their argument by asking them to make something together, using the materials in the room, to think about a time that they could remember where they had enjoyed spending time together, which had been a good time for them.

This led to them being able to think about each other over the period of time they were in therapy, in a very different way.
